I Sit And Look Out

 

 

 

I SIT and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all
        oppression and shame;
I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men, at anguish with
        themselves, remorseful after deeds done;
I see, in low life, the mother misused by her children, dying,
        neglected, gaunt, desperate;
I see the wife misused by her husband—I see the treacherous seducer
        of young women;
I mark the ranklings of jealousy and unrequited love, attempted to be
        hid—I see these sights on the earth;
I see the workings of battle, pestilence, tyranny—I see martyrs and
        prisoners;
I observe a famine at sea—I observe the sailors casting lots who
        shall be kill'd, to preserve the lives of the rest;
I observe the slights and degradations cast by arrogant persons upon
        laborers, the poor, and upon negroes, and the like;
All these—All the meanness and agony without end, I sitting, look
        out upon,
See, hear, and am silent.

 

나는 앉은 채로 세상의 모든 슬픔을 두루 본다.

온갖 고난과 치욕을 바라본다.

나는 스스로의 행위가 부끄러워

고뇌하는 젊은이들의 가슴에서 

복받치는 아련한 흐느낌을 듣는다.

나는 어미가 짓눌린 삶 속에서

아이들에게 시달려 주저앉고

앙상하게 마른 몸으로 죽어감을 본다.

나는 아내가 지아비에게 학대받는 모습을 본다.

나는 젊은 아낙네를 꾀어내는 배신자를 본다.

나는 숨기려 해도 고개를 내미는 시새움과

일방적인 사랑의 뭉클거림을 느끼며, 

그것들의 모습을 땅 위에서 본다.

나는 전쟁, 질병, 압제가 멋대로 벌이는 꼴을 본다.

순교자와 죄수를 본다.

나는 바다에서 난파선을 본다.

뱃사람들이 물에 빠진 사람을 건져주는 일에 목숨을 걸고

나설 차례를 정하려고 주사위를 굴리는 모습을 본다.

나는 오만한 인간이 노동자와 빈민과 흑인에게 던지는 경멸과 모욕을 본다.

이 모든 끝없는 비열함과 고통을 나는 앉은 채로 바라본다.

보고, 듣고, 침묵한다.
